Evelyn “Meanie” Jackson, 90, of Chattanooga, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2019, in the Hospice Care Center.  

She was a 1948 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. Evelyn was formerly employed by Erlanger Medical Center as a nurses assistant for many years and retired from Orange Grove Center as a Foster Grandparent.  She was a member of Abundant Life Church of God in Christ.  

She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Lillie Mae Varnell; husband, David Jackson; brothers, Eldridge, Lebron, and Melvin; sister, Lorrain Parnes.  

Survivors include her sons, Ivery Hammond of San Diego, CA and Marvin Hammond of Chattanooga; daughters, Jacqueline Moore and Theresa (Roger) Jennings, all of Chattanooga; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Josephine Vance of Conyers, Ga.; sister-in-law, Nadine Varnell, of Chattanooga; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends.  

Evelyn will lie in state on Thursday, Sept. 26, after 12:30 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.  

Funeral services will be on Friday, Sept. 27, at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel with Pastor Lebron Hawkins as the eulogist.  

Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
