Walter Nunnelly, 93, of Cleveland, passed away on July 19, 2023. He was born on Feb. 16, 1930 to the late Eddie and Sadie Nunnelly. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Korean War, and retired after 40 years at Bowater. Walter loved working in his two-acre garden, seeing his crops grow and sharing the fruits of his labor with all his family and friends. He was a faithful member of Bellefounte Baptist Church for many years and loved his church family dearly. Of the many things he contributed to Bellefounte, one of his greatest achievements was being instrumental in bringing longtime pastor, Lake Walker, to Bellefounte. Walter was a skilled craftsman who could fix just about anything. He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing. Additionally, he was one of the biggest fans of his children and grandchildren and followed them faithfully as they competed in sports throughout the years. Above all, Walter was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who cared dearly for his family.
In addition to his mother and father, he is preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Nunnelly; seven brothers and sisters; granddaughter, Miranda Canup; and son-in-law, Gene Canup.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his children, Allen Nunnelly (Julie), Cathy Canup-Key (Gene) and Jeff Nunnelly (Deanna); grandchildren, Heath Nunnelly, Michelle Miller (Joe), Drew Nunnelly (Leslie), Trent Nunnelly (Lauren) and Bryce Nunnelly; and great-grandchildren, Millie, Ellie, Brayden, Steele, Charlotte and Nash. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
Walter’s family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, July 23 at Bellefounte Baptist Church at 132 Bellefounte Road in Cleveland, with a Celebration of Life to follow at 4 p.m. Pastor Lake Walker will be officiating the service.
The family would like to extend special thanks to his caregiver, Becky Fort, and the Hospice of Chattanooga Care Team for their support to the Nunnelly family during this difficult time.
